Our Introductory Resort Course is available to those students 10 years and older who are in good health. This 3-hour course is offered twice daily for a maximum of 4 students, and must be completed by all non-certified divers prior to any boat dive, regardless of their diving experience. Please provide student’s height, weight and shoe size at time of reservation.
Students are to check in with instructor at the hotel pool 15 minutes prior to class. A parent or guardian must accompany minors at this time for the signing of paperwork. Students are to complete a Liability Release Form and a Medical History Statement. If any of the listed medical conditions apply, the student will need to consult with a physician to obtain a Medical Release prior to participation. We will supply the required forms upon request.
Class starts with a short lecture about basic diving techniques, the dive gear, dive site, and underwater hand signals. A short quiz is then given to assure comprehension of the material. Upon completion and review of the quiz, the class dons their scuba gear in the pool. Students may bring their own mask and fins if they like. Prescription masks are available upon request.
The instructor demonstrates a few skills that each student must perform in the pool, prior to entering the ocean. The skill portion of the class is done in water shallow enough to stand up in. Under water skills include breathing off a regulator, removing, recovering, replacing and clearing the regulator, clearing a partially flooded mask and breathing from the instructors’ secondary regulator. Each skill must be performed to the instructor’s satisfaction prior to the ocean dive. Students are given individual attention, as class time allows to accomplish the necessary skills.
Once everyone has completed this portion of the class, the students remove their SCUBA gear. The instructor transports the gear the short distance to the shore dive location while the class walks. There, they re-do their SCUBA gear and head into the ocean. The class either walks into the ocean from a sheltered beach, or enters from our secluded dock area into shallow water, depending upon the shore dive location.
The class snorkels to deeper water until the instructor signals students to switch from snorkel to regulator and begin descent. The ocean dive is approximately 20 minutes, with an approximate depth of 15–20 feet. The instructor assists the class with their buoyancy as needed while pointing out sea life of interest and monitoring each student’s air supply. The length of the dive may be determined in part by the air consumption of the students.
The instructor signals the class when to ascend to the surface. Once surfaced, the class snorkels back to the shore or dock area. The students are assisted by the instructor in the removal of the gear, either at the dock or at the cart. Successful completion of this Resort Introductory Course gives the student a two-week “pass” to dive with one of our instructors.
Two Classes offered daily:
First Class check in at 8:45 am at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel pool, class starts at 9:00am and finishes at 12:00 noon. Second Class check In @ 12:45 pm at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel pool, class starts @ 1:00 pm, finishes @ 4:00 pm. Dive will be from the Boathouse dock, a 10-minute walk from pool.
Resort SCUBA Class for Non-Certified Divers
